Another bar

A previous post reminded me of an uncle of mine. This was my father’s, long dead, younger brother, Ollie.

Photobucket

Although, with his swarthy complexion, you might guess him to be of some Mediterranean extraction, he came from German stock.

After WWII Ollie owned a very popular nightclub (with all sorts of live entertainment) in Pennsylvania, and in this case the innkeeper was the provocateur.

He had a habit of moving between two patrons at the bar, and engage them in a three way conversation. Somehow he managed to incite an argument between the two, and then walk away chuckling.

My wife’s uncle might have said; “This story is true, it just never happened”, but it did.

Carling Black Label.................... Haven't seen that in years. Used to be popular in Ireland, served at room temp, of course. Where was that photograph taken, that beer was not available everywhere. Having the notes still on the counter would suggest the US, could also be Canada. You mentioned Pennsylvania, but, could that photo have been taken elsewhere...??

Some of the old Inn Keepers and bar owners were great characters. Fook, there is a collection of Irish Bar owners in NYC, that you could write ten books about them, and their antics.

I love old photos. Sorry to hijack your Bar post. This is JFK addressing a joint session of the Irish Parliament in 1963. My father, one of the youngest members, is the only person in this photo still alive.

That's a cool foto of JFK at Parliament..

Ollie died at 50 in 1960, so the pic is from from the 50s or meybe even the 40s, and was made at the bar, in his club outside Harrisburg.

This is one of my oldest fotos, probably shot some time before 1920. That's my mother, with her mother in their tiny home town in Central Pennsylvania. Not everyone spoke English, but most spoke German (or the German dialect, Pennsylvania Dutch).

Speaking of old time barkeeps, Skinny D'Amato was a buddy of Ollie's, and he operated a saloon in Atlantic City (The 500 Club) showcasing some great talent:

Martin & Lewis teamed up together there:

I never realized that Carling was not a domestic brand, but:

"After World War II, the Brewing Corporation of America was acquired by parent firm, Canadian Brewers Limited. In 1946, the bosses in charge decided to eliminate the Black Label brand and concentrate on the higher priced and more profitable Red Cap Ale. This was a bad idea as sales dropped 40% in just two years. The Carling Black Label brand was reintroduced in 1950. The "Hey Mabel, Black Label ! " advertising phrase is born and later goes on to be one of the most popular and recognizable slogans known. In 1951, Carling hires Jeanne Goodspeed, an actress and model from New York City to become Mabel. For almost twenty years she, or an animated likeness of her was seen in television and print ads as a bar maid toting trays of Carling Black Labels to thirsty patrons."

But their slogan was also corrupted to "Hey Mable, get off the table, that dollar's there for beer!".

It seems that there is still limited availibity in the U.S.:

Sloop. That photo with your mother. Great picture to have. We have one, very similar, but it is with my grandmother and her mother. I believe the photo was taken when my grandmother was 16, so, that would probably put it having been taken in or around 1890. I'm really guessing on the year, but I have to be fairly close. For some reason, it was displayed in our National Gallery for a while.

Yeah, it's a hoot. I expect she was maybe 18 or 19 then (she would have been 100 years old last year), and it seems that she already had a wicked sense of humor. Grandma Maggie looked like a real sourpuss.

National gallery? Wow!

I have been searching for one of my dad in uniform, where he was leaning on a road sign indicating so many km to Marseilles, and on his way to the Rhine.

That's a cool foto of your family.
