A previous post reminded me of an uncle of mine. This was my father’s, long dead, younger brother, Ollie.

Although, with his swarthy complexion, you might guess him to be of some Mediterranean extraction, he came from German stock.
After WWII Ollie owned a very popular nightclub (with all sorts of live entertainment) in Pennsylvania, and in this case the innkeeper was the provocateur.
He had a habit of moving between two patrons at the bar, and engage them in a three way conversation. Somehow he managed to incite an argument between the two, and then walk away chuckling.
My wife’s uncle might have said; “This story is true, it just never happened”, but it did.

RAAAY says on Nov 10, 2009, 18:36: Carling Black Label.................... Haven't seen that in years. Used to be popular in Ireland, served at room temp, of course. Where was that photograph taken, that beer was not available everywhere. Having the notes still on the counter would suggest the US, could also be Canada. You mentioned Pennsylvania, but, could that photo have been taken elsewhere...?? It's useless to argue with ignorance... 1 funny, 0 helpful. |

RAAAY says on Nov 11, 2009, 11:14: Sloop. That photo with your mother. Great picture to have. We have one, very similar, but it is with my grandmother and her mother. I believe the photo was taken when my grandmother was 16, so, that would probably put it having been taken in or around 1890. I'm really guessing on the year, but I have to be fairly close. For some reason, it was displayed in our National Gallery for a while. It's useless to argue with ignorance... 1 funny, 0 helpful. |

sloopskipper says on Nov 11, 2009, 13:07: Yeah, it's a hoot. I expect she was maybe 18 or 19 then (she would have been 100 years old last year), and it seems that she already had a wicked sense of humor. Grandma Maggie looked like a real sourpuss. Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me". 1 funny, 0 helpful. |
