yeah, mindanao is pretty sketchy but thats why you dont get many tourists there. there are lots of cool locations on cebu and palawan. especially palawan is considered one of the top destinations not only for foreign but also for local tourists...

Kinda sounds like you hear about Colombia. My friends wife is from Mindanao and according to her its not that bad. Only a few areas that are bad

Spent 4 weeks in Camiguin in 2007 & about died of boredom. Cheesy hotel & expensive eats. Very few tourists & those that were there were mostly Europeans. Black "sand" beaches & really pretty sunsets. Not especially friendly locals, even though the island has been largely insulated from the tourist onslaught. Cheap internet. Very safe. Hardly any infrastructure, so many inconveniences. Mostly a rural fishing island.

One week would have been better. It also would have been better if the beaches had been more accessible (good ones were mostly taken up with lodges fronting them) or more accommodating for laying out, lazing, etc. Not really enjoyable for that purpose. Loved viewing the underground cemetery though.

Just trying to be real.
