I'm blaming Rubito. But your petty jealousy reminds me of a joke. ;)

Jean-Luc decides to hold a party for his Montréal friends where all the guests have to dress up as am emotion. First to arrive is his friend Phillippe who is dressed from head to toe in red. Phillippe rings the doorbell. Jean-Luc opens the door. "That is a great costume, Phillippe, but what is it?". "Ah, Jean-Luc, I am red with hanger!". "Excellente, you may come in to the party."

The doorbell rings again, and at the door is Claudette. She is dressed from head to toe in green. "Nice costume, Claudette. What it is?". "Jean-Luc, I am green with henvy!". "Fantastique! Come in to the party."

Soon the doorbell rings again. At the door is Jean-Claude. He is naked from head to toe, except his genitals are covered by a gigantic piece of yellow fruit. Jean-Luc is taken aback. He doesn't want to look, but can't help himself. A huge yellow pear is covering Jean-Claude's crotch. "Jean-Claude, it is nice to see you, but that is a very strange costume. What emotion is that?". "Jean-Luc", Jean-Claude replies. "I am fucking in dis pear."

When I was a child, there was a great Sesame Street novel called "There is a Monster at the End of this Book". Every page had a frantic Grover begging you not to turn the page, trying to restrain the four year old reader with pictures of chains, walls, explosives, fences, gates, scary signs, pleas that every time you turned the page, you were getting closer to the monster.

But the monster was just Grover. He was the monster at the end of the book, and in a much more happy and subdued mood. I see this as an important analogy for Armageddon. Keep turning the page, but things will turn out okay. Sometimes shoulders are not cold and sometimes there are soft shoulders instead of hard ones. Until then, la lucha!

No.

Colombiche lives in the Colombian bakery district of Toronto, an hour south of my boring small town. I moved here to be close to work, but don't much like the boredom and lack of culture in small town life. Overdue for a change, so I will be moving shortly back to the city, where the pastures are less green, hopefully after a few months of world travel. My brother has lived in Toronto twenty years. My sister went to school there for ten years but recently accepted a job out west.

In my field, jobs are everywhere. In every town and city in Canada, even plenty in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand (been to Oz, which is oddly like Canada, though sunnier). No reason to stagnate in Hicksville. I could do a locum in Ireland, seeing the cities of Europe and North Africa on the weekends. For now, I think I want a more extended trip though. I've been lucky, and able to travel a lot for a week at a time here and there. Now is the time to travel on my own terms.

I really have to meet Colombiche. Hip, cultured, smart, probably unique.

Oh my god.... How unique can I be? I am really just a run of the mill paisa, girl next door, except I don't have boob implants. I bite my nails and I drink 10 cups of green tea a day. What sets me appart if anything is my attention deficit disorder and the fact that I think Amparo Grisales should be the next president of Colombia.

I'm really not in the habit of using flowery language. But I would say that I am not usually wrong about stuff like this -- much of my job is instinct, and knowing all types of people. I hesitated to write it because it sounds silly.

I once wondered if I had ADD, but then I decided that I just grew easily bored. So few people take the time to question convention, expand their horizons, travel off the beaten path, get away from top ten and pre-fab culture in convenient, easy-to-open packaging. It is so easy to get trapped in some humdrum routine. Canadians love humdrum, but we need more eccentrics and thinkers. Drives me nuts. Makes me bite my nails and turn to PBH.

I've been to many places. But I've never sought out a travel blog for any other country. When I go to Colombia, I find I have a smile on my face for the entire time. Maybe there are no mills in Paisa-land, it's a special place, and everyone here knows it and believes the hype. And believes the hip? Chicks in sombreros vueltiaos? Benny Benassi? Bachué? Don't know much, but I know cultured and smart when I see it -- Internet blogs are funny things, I sometimes blather stuff here my friends of thirty years don't know, or at least would find surprising.

I would eat my sombrero vueltiao if you are not everything I said. I find it's pretty commonplace in Toronto to discuss Freedom 55 and jumping into a pool to Octavio Mesa. And who wouldn't want to be in an Almodovar movie? You're not on the verge of a nervous breakdown, you just feel trapped. I sometimes feel trapped too. I like my work, but maybe I travel to get away from Hicksville.

My ADD is self diagnosed. I tried to convince a shrink that I was coo coo and he sent me out of his office saying I was possibly one of the sanest people he ever met ha ha ha.

I thought I was abnormal because I drift off and my eyes glaze over everytime people talk to me about anything that I am not at least slightly passionate about.

I think Canada is a wonderful benevolent country, but I find a big collective lack of passion. Maybe lack of adversity breeds complancency, I don't know. I find most people here somewhat mechanical. The people I know are content to take a yearly vacation. I can't stay in the same place for more than 2 months in a row without developing an existential itch.

My life is strangely similar to an Aldomovar film, except I don't chainsmoke and I don't talk like spaniard (neither do the people around me).

Too much cold and too little adversity. And yet always complaining!

I remember interviewing my first psych patient when I was a medical student. Poor woman saw devils everywhere, a Catholic upbrigning turned toxic. She thought I was a devil too. It was tough to keep a straight face. She explained "You are just here to steal my secrets. You want to know how I can turn pennies into nickels, and why I never lose at Yahtzee. But I recognize you... Lucifer! I won't tell the devil my secrets." Come to think of it, maybe she spoke with a lisp and was chain smoking Fortunas...

Reminds me of my highschool english teacher.

She was this 60 something year old Jewish lady, very stern, always had a sour puss look on her face. Everybody hated her because she gave out really low grades. Everytime I wrote an essay I would stay back chatting with her after class. We became good friends. She opened up to me and I found out she was battling cancer and she was not really a Jew, but rather, an agnostic.

We used to get into conversations about god, life and death. I remember my final essay was about this religious satire book that I picked. I really don't even remember how I approached the subject or anything. When she handed back my essay she didn't even grade it, she just said, thanks for letting me read it.

The last day of school I ran into her. We chatted. When she found out I was going into computer science she just looked at me and said "Why the f**k would are you going to do that?".

The magazine was good, got a bit of exposure. I also did some work with the local latin radio station. I wrote a couple of pieces for "El Correo Canadiense".

I never give out the link to the magazine because what I published there was my most pathetic, mediocre, embarrassing, half assed work ever. I am as amateur as amateur gets, but even by amateur standards, damn.

What a lovely photo of cuy. Yeah, I'm glad I didn't eat it. I don't have a problem with my food staring at me (my brother and I used to fight for the fish eyeballs), but it just doesn't look like there's a lot of meat to make the effort worthwhile.

But Alpaca was good. Much more flavorful than cow steak. Unfortunately, I got violently ill shortly thereafter so it didn't stay in my stomach very long.

I have most of December off (after the 8th) and all of January off, I am still awaiting word on February and March but doubt this will be a big problem.

In December I am going to go to Argentina and Chile, and will also likely go to Cali for the Christmas feria. Still working on the final details, but flight prices are fairly reasonable. In January I plan to go to Kenya (cheap flight from the UK on Virgin Airlines), and am hoping also to go to Australia, the Big Day Out music festival in Auckland (New Zealand) and possibly Japan (if I can get there cheaply from Oz). I'm looking into the restrictions on these round the world tickets -- have been working like stink recently, will have some time to spend on this over the next day or two.

So many places I want to go. I usually do my own thing on the Internet but probably should get professional travel agent advice about the round the world tickets... But in Hicksville I have my doubts the local agents would know anything that isn't a pre-packaged resort... perhaps time to go to TravelCuts, who usually know about these things.

Nor the pathos of their trade.

There are a few things I wrote a couple of months back that I feel embarrassed about myself, if I was to read them back I would probably say "what a goof colombiche". Moreso because I never got a response from the person that I wrote them to.

PS: I read your note that you are not too happy with some of the decisions the mods have made?

When did I write a note implying I was unhappy with the decisions moderators made? I´ve always said they did a good job under difficult circumstances, and indeed, stood by them. But I am in the unfortunate habit of speaking my mind, and on one occasion I did agree with Robi, as did you. I think the moderators are very reasonable people, and if I do occasionaly disagree with them this does not matter. If anything, I would use a firmer hand, but it is not my board and I don´t think anything on a website is such a big deal. I guess I did make a free speech comment but I thought it would clearly be understood as facetious. If not, let me clarify I agree with the vast majority of moderator decisions and understand they work tirelessly to make this a more civil forum.

As for the poems, they were written rather quickly and I just think they could have been better. Posting them publically might have also sent a wrong message. I´m not really sure if you are referring to our cordial exchange of e-mails, which I enjoyed. I certainly regret your embarrassment, which would be far from what I intended. I didn´t understand it then, as it seems my reply was not received. Not a big deal, and I hope you know that I wish you well and indeed have always done so.

I wasn't talking about the joke you cracked about mods being against free speech, that was clearly just teasing. I was talking about the thread where you said the mods make sketchy decisions.

I must admit, in the past couple of days I did encounter myself frustrated with the unhappiness with the mods. I know we are far from perfect but we put in quite a bit of our time. We work as a team and we exchange opinions among ourselves and with Peter about 6 times per day on average. Since I know there is always room for improvement I created a thread where I could get everybody's feedback, because there is no point in me thinking I am doing a great job if everybody else does not agree.

Anyhow, I have always wished you well and still do. As for the emails there we a couple of emails where I asked you a couple of questions but you never replied... (or maybe you did but the replies never came my way..).

I do hope you are having fun wherever you are (Mejico lindo?) . BTW I'm probably doing the study abroad thing pretty soon too, most likely Bogota. Perhpaps in the near future you might share your experiences with mexican universties on the board.

I thought I replied to your questions, must have got lost in cyberpurgatory, or something?

I think the mods make reasonable decisions the vast majority of the time. I do like saying the word sketchy, but it´s not a word I could possibly use in a serious way. I can´t remember exactly what I said, but if you are not taking it out of context, can I assure you it was meant most benignly? I guess the mods have had a diificult couple of days, but I think you do an excellent job, Colombiche. Maybe I should say that again since it probably doesn´t get said often enough by us ingrates. I think you do an excellent job. I don´t know how you do it.

I am currently footsore in Guanajuato. And it´s beautiful, like Cartagena at its most sublime. As you probably know, it´s an old colonial city with lots of balconies and ramparts. A university town where maybe 20,000 of the 80,000 people are students. But extremely hilly, worse than Medellin. The town is shaped like a bowl, all the houses are on the side of the bowl which makes for very steep climbing. I start a month long intensive course on Tuesday -- 6 hours a day of Spanish grammar, conversation, literature, history and Mexican folk dancing. I´m in the advanced course, and will find out soon if I have bitten off more than I can chew, as I do not really speak advanced Spanish, to say the least.

I haven´t taken pictures yet. I´d be happy to keep PBHers informed once I start my course, although would not want to discourage people from taking courses in Colombia.

I spent a few days in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara too. Vallarta was full of groups of drunken Canadian viejos who enjoyed the nice weather and crazy strong dollar margaritas. Guadalajara was very nice, very Mexican and full of mariachi. I´ll be sure to go back to Tlaquepaque if I ever need to buy carved wooden furniture the size of a bus.
