We rented a motorcycle and went through this area: http://www.travelfish.org/feature/83, it's like the Colombian zona cafetera but in Laos ;)

We traveled through Laos a little over a year ago. It's a really nice break from all of the chaos that is the majority of SE Aisa. It's not a death wish to cross the road, people aren't constantly hasseling you to buy things and the nature seems a lot less touristed and/or abused. It is definitely the one country in SE ASia that I would visit again, without a doubt. It's stunning, peaceful and has a wide selection of nature-based activities to offer. I would recommend going now before people catch on and it becomes over exposed like a lot of SE Asia.

Luang Prabang and the surrounding area was really special when we went - but that was about 5 years ago now. The town is eminently walkable, people are terrific and I still remember the procession of monks at dawn collecting offerings from the people. Lots of activities outside of town. I recall there was a waterfall we climbed and the Buddha caves a short way upriver. A couple of companies were starting to offer extended boat trips up the Mekong from LP. We didn't do this when we were there, but I would have loved to. I imagine there's even more of that now.

All very affordable.

It's all still there and just as great. Those waterfalls were amazing:) The 2 day boat trip to Thailand was definitely a unique experience, and I'm glad I did it, however, it was one of the most uncomfortable boat rides I've ever been on. I remember standing for a lot of it, because the benches were so uncomfortable. There are heaps of boats making the trip each day, so this may be avoidable..
