A funny story - I had some coconut tea ina big bag and was making everyone smell it at work one day. He said "That's not made with real coconut" I asked him how did he know? He told me "Because I am from the land of coconuts". He's my boss so I couldn't say anything smart ass so I said, "Really?" and he looked up and started mumbling and after a few seconds he said "43, we have 43 coconut trees in our backyard back in India". I asked him how on earth could he be here in the US for the past 10 years and be able to count in his head the number of coconut trees in his back yard. He told me that he always new the number and was figuring whatever... The reason he knows, and this is the clincher, is that your property tax is determined by the amount of coconut trees on your property - so every land owner knows how many is on the land.

I wonder if it's against the law to cut them down and collect welfare?

There was this really awesome Southern Indian place in the 50's, east side and I've tried citysearch and a few other restaurant websites. I'm banging my head against the wall.

When I was a student I spent some time in Chennai (Bombay). I like Southern Indian food, although I am not a vegetarian, like many people in Southern India. I never did get used to waking up to a spicy breakfast, though.

And they do love their coconut.

You find a good place in NYC, let us know. There is a city in Southern India called Pondicherry that was occupied by the French for many years. The food is a fusion of French and Indian and has to be some of the best food I have had.

I goofed. The proper name for Bombay is Mumbai. The British name for Chennai is Madras. I went to Bombay but prefer chicken from Chennai.

The food in Goa can be strange. Goa has a Portugeuse influence and when I went in 1998 attracted a lot of British ravers. You can rent a motorbike for five dollars a day and tool around to the different villages. People sell "Western" food (hamburgers, etc.) with no idea what it should be, outside of big cities you can't find it. Nor should you, but after several weeks of eating curry I craved it. I ordered a hamburger at some beachside place and got some weird sort of ham sandwich with pineapple.
