i know colombia also....for years. and although i agree with the common sense of your post, and the attitude of respect one needs to be safe and at home, whereever, many of the travellers to colombia and elsewhere, have their head screwed on sideways, walk around clueless and do stupid things.

a good warning about the dangers that exist in colombia AND THERE ARE MANY (you can take that to the bank) i.e. while living at the hotel intercontinental some 20 yrs ago, pablo e. blew up one of the wings of the hotel just to get at one of his enemies. while down town with my secretary, a sicario rode up on a moto and shot this old beggar about five times, right in front of my face. the same happened in las bodegas de madera....i was with my father and brother, buying wood for our workshops, and some guy walks up and shoots this old man who had nothing in the world...he schlepped wood for a place to sleep and something to eat.

one morning, while getting up and around near out home in poblado, a fucking huge explosion goes off and turns out to be a bomb at the macarena which took out forty innocents and as many cars as well as brought down the over pass on the freeway.

out in eastern antioquia....common sense and caution, will not cover your ass. there are no nice guys there, only deadly serious ones. so, friend, a word of caution about the realities which are below the radar in our beloved colombia, is never wasted.
