Has traveled in: worked many years in the middle east...iran, israel, syria, lebanon; then all across north and central africa. also worked all over europe and india. spent the last 19 years in and out of colombia; we have a home in envigado.
Wants to travel to: no travel plans...just want to get our youngest through catholic high school and off to university, so mom and i can return to the family in colombia.
Favourite traveling style: the most comfortable possible. after so many years of working in so many poor, depressing countries, flying first class and using nice hotels is my style.
About (hobbies etc...) was a textile researcher for near 35 years and now all that interests me is collecting and restoring antiques.

hi DW, thanks for the reply on medaillin and the fashion industry. I currently do all my production in china, i wish it was in colombia :( . Anyway i came across Colombiamoda show in MED on the internet which somewhat relates to my industry and i think i'll go check it during that week. Yeah, i would really appreciate escaping the tourist traps and gettting to know MED/Colombia and all in a different manner. i must admit, although i've done extensive travelling from backpacking to business, some of these crime stories are freaking me out (the one about drugging people), knowing myself as the adventurous type, i feel i could run into trouble. I would appreciate any advice, contact, that you might be able to provide, are you down there now ?

Hi Douglas,

I am very glad to add you as a friend and quite flattered to be part of your friend list as well!

I don't know about spending christmas in Colombia this year :( but I will be there beginning of next year, I *might study there for a few months.. and who knows what else! Life is a river and I am riding the current. Sometimes it's mellow, sometimes it's whitewater and you need the paddles and the helmet lol. There is still a chance I might spend New Years in the caribbean (tobago) if I find decent airfare.

Lucky you spending chrismas in your nice warm florida weather. I spent christmas in Miami a couple of years ago... nice, we sat in the backyard grilling chicharrones and chorizos and drinking guarito. It was fun. One thing I really suck at is surviving winters.

Well, if I am ever in florida I will give you a shout, please do the same if you ever find yourself up here in the artic circle he he he.

hi,

just saw your post about llano grande EAFIT campus. im going back to medellin in september(MY 3RD TIME!), before i used to work for a private institute and my second time i kindda worked for some 'friends' that turned out to screw me over for money. anyways, wanted to ask you for advice. i would like to set up a volunteer(NGO) organization in medellin. im interested in teaching english to poor children in schools where they cant afford an english teacher. i did it before in thailand but most of my life i taught in taiwan where i am at the moment.

i know theres is one org called GLOBATEER but they are charging ridiculous amount of money if you want to volunteer(something like 600USD/week). my idea would be to start teaching english for these kids and also start a project where i could get people from all over the world coming to medellin and volunteering without paying so much. other than that im also interested in volunteering with street dogs. i dont even know if you can help me somehow with this so sorry to bother you with this msg. but if you had any ideas or recommendations please let me know. thanks a lot!

Hola Douglas - Happy Father's Day. Sometimes Dad's get missed on this day and I never know why. Ironically I noticed every year my father is out of the country on this day. I eventually learned it was strategic, as I was the only one of his children to wish him a Happy Father's Day every year....I think it hurt his feelings his other kids don't do the same. So if he is unavailable - then he does not have to think about it (sad huh). So - I don;t care if he is in Spain I am calling him, ja!!

Douglas: "Yes" ... I have a 25 year old son. I got divorced when he was 5 years old and the nature of my sentiments derive specifically from this experience with my ex-husband. I raised him as a single-mother and he my son never regrets my decision for divorce at his young age...in fact, he grew up to learn "why" we divorced and is grateful he had two loving parents...although they lived separately.

The question of "how a Colombian gets so lost....." that is a great question, a good tittle for a book btw, the answer is yet to be discovered as I am still in awe thinking about it myself. It is a long story, perhaps one of these days I will share it with you. I left Colombia in 1972 to go to School, Brown University, and met my husband who is from the midwest US (Missouri) fell in love and married him. He was studying Latin American Studies and later got a PHD in Sociology/Demography and got involved in all kinds of projects which took us all over the developing world. I worked as a contractor for the Federal Government as well. We are now in Albania and will be here for another year. Our travels in Europe have been pure recreational trips, as it is one of our favorite parts of the world and were lucky to be posted here, because it has given us a change to see many countries in Eastern Europe which we never visited before. I loved the middle east, it has always fascinated me. I will hope to see Damascus before we finish here. Next year we will be moving back to Medellin, that is our plan, and retire there. I am planning on going there this coming August and hope to find a place, a nice finca to enjoy ourselves some more. The only drawback is our daughter now 33, lives in Annapolis and we will be a bit far from her, but our hope is to spend some time in the US and some time in Colombia.
I have read you are also waiting to go back to Medellin. What took you to Colombia?
Cheers

Such an interesting life you have had...and so many kids!!!! I only have one, Paula, she is 33 and yet to be married, just moved to Annapolis last weekend with her beau ( we are hoping they get married and we become grandparents someday ( can't wait!) but nowdays you just have to wait for them to take the plunge. She has an Masters in Education (Instructional Design) and works for Booz, Allen and Hamilton at their HQ in Virginia, she has a great job and loves what she does. I will see her soon in Maryland before I go to Medellin.
Has your daughter decided on Georgetown yet? Great school, but of course you know that,ha?
Have any nietos? Is your wife a paisa? She must be since you say the family is in Envigado?
Are you planning on selling your finca in Llanogrande?
I was borned and raised in Bogota but my whole family on both sides, are all paisas. My Dad left for Bogota at a young age to become an airline pilot, he was one of the first pilots Avianca had and he flew all over the place in DC4s'. In his later years with Avianca he became Operations Director until his retirement in the late 60's. Avianca then, was a great airline btw, HAHA.

How is your new place? I hope you and the wife like it very much.

Feliz Navidad!

Hey Douglas,
I apologize for dropping three comments on your page here -not quite sure what happened. I used to date a Colombiana who came to the states and we have remained friends. She is a great lady who when we met was suprised at my knowledge of Colombia and also my favorite writer is Gabo. She now has her children here and I am so impressed with how great these kids are. I have met a lot of her family and they are really good people -within 5 minutes of meeting her father, we were sitting down having a beer and playing guitars; you cant beat that. We both live here in Alabama and I am truly amazed at how much she enjoys camping and we plan on getting her kids into it. I have never been to Colombia, but it is on my radar. By the way, when are you going to get back there?
thanks and take care,
Chris

I need friends also, Douglas!

Not in Colombia now, but I should be there for a short visit next month. Probably only for 3 weeks. Then I need to return here to finish selling off all my stuff before I move there permanently early next year. That's the plan, anyway.

Sorry to hear about the abuela. I hope she's getting good care.

Douglas

I could not find your email address or I would have sent you a private message. But anyway, I wanted to catch you up on my trip to Barranquilla. There are certainly many stories to tell. I had a great time. I stayed in and really liked Barranquilla norte. It reminded me of a little Miami. I met some very nice people there. I will get back for sure. Certainly, there are other parts that are very much poverty stricken. I took a tour one day, and saw Soledad and other parts. I do understand why perhaps there are so many women online looking for marriage and dating services there. There is much growth. Certainly seeing prosperity and feeling like one can not participate must be very hard. There is much opportunity there, to do many things, including hooking up. I purposely did not look for any p4p in Barranquilla, though I did do a drive by the places I read about. Besides I had my hands full with what I was doing. I would imagine that given more time there will be more opportunity to explore, as well as create some new liaisons.

I found all of what I was informed that I would encounter. One who simply wanted to feed, literally, at the trough. Another looking for a a sugar daddy. And another looking for love and the joy of leaving me very tired. I liked Colombia very much, at least the part of the country I visited. I think next time I will head to Bogota and also visit Barranquilla. I wanted to go to Barranquilla first because I thought it would be more diverse than Bogota or Medellin. I liked that part very much. The diversity and the beauty. I could see that Cartegena is really influenced by the African/Caribbean slave trade and culture. I have to tell you being in Central America sometimes makes me feel the embarrassment of riches that exist in America. So, I will continue to make contact, and explore, and get back to Barranquilla in January or February

I was also in Costa Rica. That country still feeds my soul. All in all it was a nourishing trip. I look forward to meeting you one day. Thanks for the education and the advice.

D, We are currently living in Texas, but like you said, Colombia is home. I am staying around until my kids are off to college and then we're gone. Of course, mine are still litle, so that's some long way off.
