A few years ago, the Senate voted for the easing of travel restriction for Americans but it got vetoed by Bush. Bush was up for re-election the following year and needed the Miami votes. Perhaps when the Castros are out of the picture. There is still a lot of annomosity between the Castros and the Cuban exiles. A lot of property and businesses were stolen by Fidel.

Americans can not travel to Cuba because they are a free country and have freedom of speech and thought and religion....
Also the Nazi party is legal in the USA so they really do have freedom and democracy.......
Just the communist party is illegal, because they are a democracy and have a constitution that guarantees freedom of expression and though and the right to bare arms......
But they can't travel to Cuba because it is communist, but they can travel to China that is communist and does billions of dollars in trade with the USA.......
Huh? What? Did any of that just make ant sense at all????????????...................

Americans can travel to Cuba. They just have to go through another country. Very rarely does anybody get in any trouble.

Of the few people who have been collared for traveling to Cuba, not a single one has ever been prosecuted because there is no US department to do that.

There was a report once of a guy that paid a $7,500 fine for traveling there. As I recall the story, he was kind of bullied into paying by immigration or face a potential jail sentence.

There was another guy who got caught and requested a hearing. That was over 7 years ago. He knew there was no agency in existence to conduct the hearing.

If you read the fine print of the ban, it does not ban US citizens from traveling there. It only bans US citizens from spending money there. Not sure how you could do one without the other except on sponsored/approved medical/mercy missions and such.

Obama has suggested lifting the ban for Cuban Americans to be able to return and visit relatives etc. That may be the first step!

Technically I believe the law is not that (US) Americans cannot go to Cuba, it is that they are prohibited from doing any form of commerce with Cuban entities. If an (US) American can find someway to get there for free and never contribute a penny to the Cuban gov´t, then I´m pretty sure they haven´t broken any US law.

Sandman0011 and august are both correct in as much as they say that it is not illegal for an American citizen to go to Cuba, it is only illegal to spend money there. Stupid but true. All winter there are direct flights from Canada to Cuba at great prices to all inclusive resorts. One price covers everything, air, hotel, food and lodging. And great deals too.

arn't there direct flights from Miami now? I know of plenty of Cubans in the US that go back to visit family all the time.

I got married there and we were told gringos do it all the time.
