Here's what I found: There are three general motives behind people talking bad about another person. 1. They're talking with someone to solve a problem they're having with the individual, but lack the skill to do it in a kind way. 2. They want to discredit the other person, or cause harm to the other person. Their motive is to hurt, or they feel they must defend themselves from hurt, so they hurt first. 3. They want to be accepted, so they find common humor, evil, etc. to talk about to make themselves feel better.

The first group: They talk about the problem, may go into detail, may exagerate a little, but their motive is mainly to get an idea of how to solve the problem, and not to hurt the other person. They may talk innapropriately, or in a way that may leave a negative light on the person they're talking about, but its not hateful.

The second group: People who talk bad about another person to cause harm: They seem to feel like you have some major impact in their life, and they are scared of you. For example, a friend who feels like her life is determined by how much boys like her will often bad mouth another girl who the boys like more than her - or that she thinks they like more than her. She does this because she feels like she must manipulate the people around her to stay safe. If she took responsibility for her own actions, and her own ability to change, to act, she wouldn't feel so threatened by other people. So usually, people who talk maliciously are really very terrified people. They feel they must manipulate the people around them to be safe. They don't start by changing their own actions and choosing how they feel, they let life around them tell them who they are. Its a very threatened place to live.

Third group:

They people are a combination of the two catagories above. They talk about others because they have nothing better to do. They just talk without considering the people or friendships that will be damaged, its just entertainment.

I hope this helps. Bottom line, I found that the more someone is trying to harm and manipulate, usually the more sensitive and insecure that person is on the inside, so much so that they feel the need to control everyone around them to keep their lives stable.

When I find myself talking about someone, I ask myself - if this person were listening to me talk, would I feel honest and respectful of that person, even if what I'm saying is negative? That's my check.

Mostly, it is about the messenger and not the message. Since we use words, it is easy to find oneself oposed to another because of the way that they express themselves. It may be because this person has different political beliefs or they may be ignorant of how to effectively make their point. There is a lot of disrespect here for people that have opinions. I am very careful about what I write because I know how it feels to be berated on this site. Somethings you just have to bite your tongue and let them go without commenting. If we had better manners and behaved with respect for all opinions, there would be a lot less of this. I disagree with most people on this site but I don't remember ever personally attacking anyone. I may have disagreed with their opinion but I also have a right to an opinion if I express it honestly and without malice. Peace bretheren.

People ask a question and want to know both sides of the story, so a negative comment may be seen as a positive. Everyone comes to this forum to be helped, so lets keep it that way.

So when somebody attacks a strongly held opinion, some of us feel attacked personally, and then launch our own counter-attack, but on the other person rather than on what they said. So why do some of us find it so difficult to separate the message from the messenger??

Whatever the reason, it only takes an extra second or two to look at what you wrote and see if you are talking about the person or the issue. If you see that you are talking about the person, hit the backspace key. ---- Hint: look for the words "you are" (or "you asshole", etc, etc) ----.

As a proud member of PBH for over than five years now, and a recent convict that served 4000 minutes in "The Fishbowl", all I can offer is that for some reason the powers that be choose to let Darloup run at will. Mister Darloup has somehow been rewarded the power to have some very helpfutl members of this forum to be banned. I also got a warning from the owner of this site (PETER) about my comments and opinions. So Mister Peter, if you want to delete my account, go ahead and do so. You should be congratulated for what you created with PBH, but you are now lacking perspective.

There are a half a dozen commenters on PBH, that bring out the worst in everyone and prevent this from being a productive site as well as scaring away good posters.

AS pointed out previiously, the description of 'personal attacks' and 'talking badly' are actually the group policing itself.

I've pointed out huge contradictions on this thread as well as a lot of hypocrisy.

I'll let the medical professionals diagnose the reasons why three or four have motivations to create the problems they do as well as why they are not policed.

But anyone reading this thread can see what the problems are.

There is a sub-hypothesis about why do some people have a stamp of approval by moderation to initiate, persist, and perpetuate personal attacks; but after so many requests, i don't think that will ever be expalined or resolved.

I have only one account and one identity, ......I've never initiated a personal attack on anyone.

YOU turned this me calling a bitch and animal to a third party ( not even directly) into a big deal. I explain the definition in Wikipedia, but you chose to look farther to another mining when I have said what it was, then you want me to explain to you, a person that I have no idea who you are. Now I read other posts and you are there with the usual gang hand in hand getting aggressive and mean to Greg and insinuating that Daloup has something to do with my mes? I don't see my questions on Gregs behavior in restaurants as 'getting mean'. The PBH rules say we are encouraged to question and disagree within these forums, and some of us, like me, PROVIDE EVIDENCE to back up my points. Greg has mistreated well meaning people on this site, me included. Let me say it another way, Greg made his bed and now he is sleeping in it.

The funny thing about all this, is that there have been only 4 personal attacks initiated against me at various times, ....by you, doug, darloup, and greg. Sounds like there is a gang here alright.

What you're seeing is a conflict between two opposing forces within PBH; one wants all rules applied evenly, the other side 'rules by friendship'. My own suggestion is to install double-ignore and let each person subjectively decide who can participate in their conversations.

Many fine posters from the past, now departed, as well as a few of us here now who have chosen to fight for change rather than leave, await some changes to make this site just a little bit more friendly. After all, a lot of people have scratched their initials into the site many years ago, and feel that it is second home.

You may not check in here enough to understand the subtle nuances of satire currently going on in this sandbox. Yes, an 'intentional sandbox' and a scarcity of good posts like yesteryear, although I've heard that many of our departed friends will return if some improvements are made.
