I was at an eatery in the northern half of Bogota in fall 07 and there were a large group of Americans (presumably government, military or "consultants") sitting a table not so far celebrating an accomplishment . Some of the individuals in their group were the loudest people there that night (in English of course). They were talking like the whole restaurant could not understand them and I heard all sorts of working/office/ things that I do not think were appropriate to shared at high volume. I will not share them.

However, if this is how most Americans socialise in groups (and I know that there are exceptions), then I can see security being an issue.

Tone Loc... please stop with your ignorant posts. You are by far the most annoying poster here. You used to give some good information but now when you aren't talking about smoking bazuco or smacking gays, you seem to have a problem with Americans.

Grow up and stop smoking crack and listening to gangster rap.

To some of the other posters, USA is a very large country with all different types of people. Our different regions have different attitudes, accents, typical political attitudes, just as different countries do in other placs. I will be the first to admit you will find some Jerks in American travels for several reasons. But the same could be said for the majority of people who you find abroad. In Bogota you might find some wealthy old gringo's, some regular gringo's traveling, som Military gringos (in which case you are probably going to see young Marines who guard the embassies and are out on a night of drinking and chasing women...they might be a little loud and rowdy but again they are probably 18 - 25 and full of piss and vinegar) anyhow you cannot judge a country on few assholes that are out being drunk.

In my case, If I judged all Colombians by the rich, frio and pretentious Colombianos I met in DC...I would never have gotten to see how great Colombia is for myself.

Totally agree.
During the late 70's and 80's during the package tour explosion from the UK, I think the worst of the Brits used to have their cheap booze/sun/sea/etc holidays in Spain. Thank God they did not come to Colombia! That is why I did not go; I did not wish to put up with people of my nationality making the overall reputation of Brits one to be despised like our football hooligans. And certainly not the type of people who I wished to mix with and they do not constitute the masses.
For some reason, people representing many nationalities seem to go through their second childhoods when abroad and forget about their responsibilities to both themselves and to their country's reputation. Colombians, like everybody else, are more likely to remember the bad scenarios than the good and that could explain why to gain the full trust of Colombians can prove to be difficult. It only takes a few percent of foreigners to be out of order and we run the risk of being typecast and all being seen as being the same.
Fortunately, the majority of these subhumans return home and do not immigrate.
