These maps are more interesting if seen in "satellite" view.

The first one shows some sites along the lost city trek. You leave the paved road at pin named "start of 4x4 track" and follow a rough road (by 4x4) to "El Mamey". From here after a quick lunch you walk to "Day 1 accomodation" and stay there for the night (there is a bar here with a pool table). Then the following day you walk past a large Kogi settlement to "Day 2 accomodation". Finally on the third day you walk to the "Start of the Steps" and then follow the steps for 1 hours to the "Lost City". On the 6 day trek you return the same way. This area is well covered by satellite in google maps and you're able to see quite good detail.

The second link is for some sites along the route to Mompos from Magangue. You can get to Magangue from Sincelejo or Baranquilla. In Magangue you get dropped off at "Magangue Terminal" and need to walk to "Magangue Ferry Terminal" to catch a speedboat to "Bodegas" (6000COP). Here you catch a taxi (normally all the way to Mompos) to a bridge that is currently missing (as of January 2009) (2000COP) - pin labelled "Missing Bridge". Here you have to catch a small boat across to the other side of the river (1000COP). On the other side of the river you can catch a taxi all the way to Mompos (8000COP).

I hope these are interesting for you.

If you haven't seen it this is quite an interesting documentary by the BBC about the Kogi people. The Kogi are descendents or the Tayrona people who originally inhabited the Lost City. You will meet a lot of the Kogi people along the trek.

About a month ago I got up very close to Machete by motorcycle. Some Colombian on the bus between Cartagena and Santa Marta had told me that u can hire guides independently and cheaply from Machete. Its something of a racket what these tour agencies charge for the trip. I hiked 7 daze and nites thru the Himalayas without a guide, staying in little villlages and eating dahl baht. Is it not feasible to do the same on the Lost City Trek? Especially now that the whole zone is military controlled and the bag guys are no longer lurking in thoze enchanted hills, at least not in the trek zone. Any insights on this?

Peter,

If this is a LOST city, are we really supposed to find it?

Please let a lost city be utterly lost - if only for our sons and daughters...

Better to have tried and failed than having regrets all your life about what you MIGHT have missed

Wow Sapo, and to think I was looking at farms to buy in that exact same area only a few weeks ago. I was under the impression that the zone was now secure, and probably for the most part is, but obviously there remains wrinkles. How about posting a reward for theze dudes. Always worked for me in Costa Rica when I was looking for the bad guys who had just ripped me off. They say "money talks" but Bob Dylan once said "money dont talk, it SCREAMS". Enuff $ or should I say COP and somebody will put the finger on theze holdouts......
