scum....It is a gift isn't it? I can play but I suck due to lack of practice, but I have a weakness for nice guitars.

I have a Les Paul Goddess, she's so beautiful. I think I might have to play tonight.

kenblanquito says on Aug 13, 2009, 17:17:

Yes, read that sad news on BBC news but he had a good innings to be fair and he was still playing apparently until almost the end.
What an innovator, both in terms of playing style and his progressive mind: he hand-made his first solid-state electric guitar years before they were popular and they thought he was nuts! He also dabbled with recording techniques and was one of those responsible for multi-track tape recordings.
Obviously a huge homage was shown by guitarists who popularised his guitars later on: Clapton, Kossoff, Page, Green, Slash et al and the variation of sounds possible were incredible. From laid back whining blues to thunderous riffs; these will be hard to beat! May Koss be reunited with his mentor asap and I hope they have a good jam session!

Above are several interviews. Some interesting facts I didnt know.
The latest video I have seen looking at the utube stuff was 2003. He would have been 88 and he was still playing the fast licks. Its something special to see him at that age play that way.

Miguel says on Aug 13, 2009, 17:55:

Good points, kenblanquito; not only was LP a great guitarist, his experiments with multi-track recordings were equally important, not too mention that he had one hell of a sense of humor. You mentioned some good players, but don't forget what Duane Allman did on slide with a LP.

Miguel.
I have sinned; the Allmans were my favourite US blues rock band of the seventies and indeed Duane was a true master.
He should have been on the list!
Off to listen to Statesboro Blues and the Layla box-set!

Miguel says on Aug 13, 2009, 18:12:

Now I get it; you're limey! After Statesboro Blues, go directly to Don't Keep Me Wonderin'...BTW the sessions with Les Paul and Chet Atkins were pretty kickass as well. Clapton playing with Allman on Have You Every Loved A Woman is pretty hard to beat, although EC by that time had become a Strat player.

I recently took the time to read everything about him on Wikipedia until that point I had no idea he was still alive or all the innovations he'd developed.

Truly a genius.

Les Paul was an amazing guy. I have had some LPs over the years, some were ok and others were just magical. My choice guitars are 335s and other ES semi hollows, but the LP is what I would use for scorching blues and although they sound great through a fender amp, they have to be married to a marshall amp -just produces an amazing tone. I have a lot of guitars but only one LP -a 1985 sunburst custom (with paf reissue pickups) that is pretty abused and is known as the boat anchor due to its heavy weight. Babygirl, I have a friend who has a goddess and that is a nice axe, very nice.

"I happen to own a mint 57 LPG" -lpdiver, if you have a 57 (gold top I am guessing) I am very envious. I have seen the old gold tops refinished in a burst to resemble a 59burst (pretty much the same guitars spec wise). I am a huge fan of the 59 neck shape -like baseball bats I guess.

I bet Les Paul really enjoyed the resurgence of the les paul guitar in the recent 20 years -in the 80s it was all about shredding and guitars like Jacksons, Ibanez, and super strats were the choice of players. You could buy LPs all day long for a few hundred bux -I sure as hell did. Now a custom runs 4000.00 and arent nearly as good as they used to be.

Some of the best psychedelic fuzz I ever heard came out of Les Paul guitars. A round, sweet, almost crying tone. Another master gone. RIP. I saw Segovia in concert when he was in his eighties. Didn't miss a lick! Great album is Chet Adkins and Mark Knophler -- "Neck and Neck"
