Pissed off a Medellin BANCOLOMBIA teller this morning

I was in no way in the wrong. A prelude to what happened is that someone deposited $200.000 into my bank account just last week correctly filling out the deposit slip and the teller f´d up and put the money in the wrong account. After multiple trips to the bank with the receipt, I finally got my money 4 days later. So now comes this morning. In reference to cash deposit slips, a few months back, Bancolombia switched from using a manual “RECIBIDO” stamp to putting the slip thru a printer. I will accept the printed “timbre” as the sello but in big red letters, the deposit slip says “ESTE RECIBO NO ES VALIDO SIN LA FIRMA Y EL SELLO DEL CAJERO”. And every time up until this point, a teller has always signed the form. Meanwhile as she handed my unsigned copy of the slip back to me, I asked her politely to sign it saying “me haces un gran favor y firmar mi copia”. She replied that she never does. Now the deposit was not for my account and therefore, I cannot easily confirm that the money made it into the intended account and their form, their rules, blatantly says it must be signed by the teller to be valid so I pointed out on the form where it states that fact to be valid and I insisted she sign it. Just think if the money didn´t make it into the intended account, I would go to the bank manager with the deposit slip and you know the first thing that she will say is it isnt valid as it isnt signed. The teller snatched it away from me and rolled her eyes making the tch sound as she squiggled her signature and threw it back to me (which is a verrrrry rude thing to do in this culture). I replied “Muchas gracias, Qué mi dios te pagué y señora no necesitas estar tan grosera, solo estoy siguiendo las reglas del banco y estoy tratando evitar molestias” (Thak you and may my lord repay you and that you dont have to be so rude, I am just following your rules and trying to avoid problems) I Left and she is lucky I didnt report her to the bank manager.

Something so small and easy and she gets pissed off for that? But your right better to cover your own ass.

You never know. She might have had her own little scam figured out and your insistence for the signature f***'d that up. Sad just how common that level of service is in Colombia. I have found bad service all over the world, but to be snarly about it, que pena.

Ironically, in the written amount of the deposit, in this case 234.320 pesos, she covers her ass and put large slashmarks in front of the first 2 and after the final 0 so the deposit amount cannot be augmented.

BancoColombia has robbed more people lately than Dilinger. I would recomend you change banks. yes your right wow that was very rude. I have no doubt she was instructed to not sign these forms. If you go back another teller will not sign it either I bet ya, which is unreal since all other banks do it. I will check next time.

Anyway glad you stuck up for what was clearly right and protected yourself. I don't argue in Colombia anymore I just stand there till I get the bank manager to come over. If you get upset you lose even if your right.

oneofor, I keep all my deposits in a folder in case the payee asks for proof (which is another way colombians try to scam you is ask for proof of payment, say 20 months later) and all are signed by the teller.

Ah, interesting point. I just checked a BanColombia receipt and you're right (says it's invalid unless signed).

I guess I have one of those similar moments every couple of months, where I perceive something as blatantly rude, rise to the occasion and respond to it. When you think about it, it's probably nothing to do with you personally, she's probably pissed off about something else in her life, or just having a bad day.

I would have reported her, Two months ago I transferred money into my account by internet banking, when I went to check the account there was no money, they told me that it was returned as I did not fill out the forms correctly, but 3 weeks later still no money, then they told me the money was in Bogota, after a few more days, she goes sorry but your money is still here in the branch, she told me that I needed to enter my Cedula number when internet banking, but I told her they dont ask for it, she could not understand why we don't have a cedula number in Europe,
to be honest I couldnt be bothered trying to expalin to her, all I wanted was my money, but when she went to transfer it into my account it was not there, f.. knows how they operate the banking system here, I had to wait another two hours for them to find it, I guess someone was planning on a shopping trip, so now as soon as I transfer money I withdraw it straight away as I don't trust the banks here not forgetting the stupid charges every month,

She probably didn't sign her real name anyhow. You could have signed it just as well.

I'd go out of my way to get into her line every time. I'd compare signatures, and I'd report her every chance I got.

The bank is first the consumer is last. The customer is wrong and always wrong at that. This is Colombia and the little guy is always getting frogged.

The bank was protecting itself from thieves and shitty accounting principles by putting it back on you and your loss should there be a error somewhere or someone robbed something.

Employees at the banks have been known to set people up leaving with a lot of cash. I trust them about as far down on the list as you can get.

I have found service overall in Colombia to be outstanding, better than any other developing country that I have visited.

However, banks seem to be a large exception. They have some sort of quasi-monopoly status and so many people depend on them, waiting in lines, etc. I had a teller get pissed at me over nothing last year.

i never used bancolombia for anything more than a funds holding and transfer facility. i didn't need their money and it was used for receiving funds from the u.s. and distributing them to accounts in colombia. nothing more. so the only hassle i ever had was lines. remember, many years back BIC (bancolombia) in oviedo was a tiny little office about the size of a very small restaurant. none of the back structures existed until after the mid nineties or later.

Caution – Bancolombia transfers

I recently ordered a new vehicle from Casa de Britanica making a transfer of funds from
my Bancolombia account to the Bancolombia account of Casa de Britanica. It appears to
be a simple process since we both use the same bank. I was given a “faded” copy of the transfer receipt showing a deposit to the account of Casa de Britanica. A couple of days later I contacted Britanica to confirm the transfer. The dealer confirmed they received funds from Bancolombia on the date in question, but had no way of knowing the identity of the sender. I was instructed to fax a copy of my transfer receipt. They received the fax, but said it was unsatisfactory due to the faded condition of the “receipt”. The receipt
doesn’t contain personal information, but does provide both our accounts which should be sufficient at least to me.

I feel confident the situation can be resolved in time, but we should be careful about bank to bank transfers in Colombia. The burden of proof is yours and not the bank or recipient.

I have been concerned about making transfers using my “debit card” at the caja and ask the operations officer what would happen if funds were transferred to the wrong account by mistake. I was shocked at her answer. If you or the teller enters the wrong account number the loss is yours and not the bank even if the teller entered the “wrong account number” for you. You would need to identify and contact the recipient personally and
ask for a return of your money. I have known this operations officer for several years and feel the information reliable.

I would never use Bancolombia’s internet transfer service due to security issues.
Just my personal opinion.

We aren’t living in Kansas……so be careful.

If you had internet banking set up, you could just go online and print the receipt of your transaction.

You can also order a funds transfer yourself to any BanColombia account using the ATM. But the quality of the printed receipt from the ATM is also not great.

Alternatively you can fax them an account statement showing your full name and account number. They should be able to cross-reference this info to the existing transfer transaction details.
