LCD Prices - Samsung and LG

Monday Exito had another one of their sales - 15% off LG and Samsung - basically, the prices were close to what they are in the US for LCDs from these companies. I picked up a LCD for the spare bedroom for ironically the same price as at Best Buy except I got a 3 year on-site warranty. Always, the best time to buy TVs is on the Monday of the 3 days weekends (Monday was All Saints Day).

mine was a different stock and it was 15% off this weekend. So 899-15% is what, 780K?

I don't think LCDs are available in 50 inch - 52 and 46 are the closest sizes. Exito has a 46 inch Sharp for 2699 but I would not suggest you buy it if the model ends in 43 as this model is 3 years old and prone to "banding". I think you could find a good deal on a 46" but I have really checked into it. Always look on the back of the displays and check the date the TVs were made and if that is not available, take a photo on your phone then go home and google the model to check it out before you sink a lot of money into it..

LIke I said, LG is my fav (Samsung number 2) - they are made in Mexico and with the FTA the prices are very good -- best when Exito has the 15% discount and the prices are close to what is available in the US but most importantly, you have 3 years of service included in the price (and they will come to your house!).

larry,
in your experience how frequently do they have these 15 % off sales?

larryrn says on Nov 4, 2009, 05:06:

Usually when they have the 3 day weekends they have the sale. I purchased a LG 6 months ago, 42" LCD when I was living in Monteria on one of these weekends for 1,899,00.

I see Éxito Cheapinero giving 20% off Samsung LCD and Plasma most weekends regardless of whether it is a public holiday.

Not that many weekends in Colombia don't have a free Monday tacked on so that observation is somewhat academic

You need to look at the model numbers....The older models usually are very close in price at Exito and the United States but on the newer models not even close.....LG 42" 1080P Full HD I bought in October for 699.00 at TigerDirect Mall of Americas ... The same exact Model at Exito 1080P was 400.00 dollars more...now Exito had a 42" LG 720P for a good price that same model was only 100.00 more than TigerDirect in Miami..
Best Buy is expensive..would not even compare....TigerDirect Outlet/Comp USA Stores you can get better prices

You cannot compare the size but you need to compare model number and if its Full HD or not....like 1080P to 720P is a difference...Newer Models to Older Models..

Newer Models will always be expensive in Colombia.....

Also factor in if your airline is going to charge you extra to check in the TV as baggage...I was lucky since I was a Platino Member they waived the 100.00 fee and on Avianca they only allow up to 42 inches on a LCD TV...

But once again you have no warranty when you buy a TV in the US and bring it here to Colombia - vs if you buy the TV here (LG/Samsung) you get 3 years warranty in-house.

Are you talking about LED LCD tv's or just plain LCD? Look at the difference in the thickness next time you are at Exito or Carrefour.

LCD not LED.

Which is best?

LCD, LED and plasma televisions may seem identical when you're in the store, but the similarities end once you look past the thin form factor and big screens.

Plasma TVs use a sheet of miniscule individual plasma cells that create a picture when an electrical charge is applied. LCD televisions, on the other hand, use liquid crystal compressed between two glass plates; an image is created when electricity is applied to these crystals. LED TVs use liquid crystal, but unlike regular LCD televisions they use a backlight made of hundreds of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) instead of a fluorescent lamp. The LEDs can be evenly distributed around the back of the television’s panel or situated in the edges of the screen to create a very thin display chassis.

How well an image is displayed on a television panel — whether it is a Blu-ray movie, an HDTV broadcast or a high-definition video game — depends on a television's display technology and its image processing capabilities.

it's so sunny, hot and bright here in Santa Marta that Plasma would be ruled out. I rule out LED because of the price so all that is left is LCD

I think most people would prefer to not pay 80% more to have the 3 year warranty. Too bad electronics are so expensive here in Colombia.

True- but bringing the TV here would cost 250 dollars plus impuesto (30% based on the Google of the model by DIAN).

I didn't smuggle anything in. I met with the Colombian Immigration officials on the ship. They stamped my passport and didn't ask a thing about any of my luggage or what I was bringing. They even let me bring the pick up on the terminal next to the ship. I had approval of the cruise line to disembark in Cartagena. The final stop of the cruise ship was Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I only missed 2 days of the cruise.

Today my shipment arrived from Florida - Amazing - shipped on Wednesday afternoon and delivered here in Santa Marta to my house for 1.35 a pound. The coolest thing is an Aluratek Internet Clock Radio from Amazon.com - picks up thousands of radio stations and the sound is incredible.
