Help Requested, Going from Medellin to Bogota

I need to recieve a dog in Bogota at the airport this week and just wanted to know how easy it is to travel as far as road conditions and signage. I can take the Medellin to Bogota Road out of Bello but was wondering if it was pretty much clear sailing after that. I will drive and was going to allow 8 hours. Is that rerasonable or should I allow 10? Also if someone can tell me where approximately the airport is in relationship to my entry into Bogota that would be great.

Thanks in advance,

David

I believe from Medellín you come into Calle 80, and the airport is on Avenida El Dorado. which is roughly parallel. It seems that the friendliest junctions (in terms of being able to turn off Calle 80 and being able to turn onto El Dorado) is Avenida Calle 68.

So come in on Calle 80, turn right into AC68, turn right onto El Dorado, go all the way to the end for the airport, then do it back to front to get home again.

Coming from Autopista Medellín i/o calle 80 there is a shortcut to take Avenida Ciudad de Cali, which in turn would take you to Avenida el Dorado. I am sure there might another way, but for easier direction is better to take Avenida CC second would be Avenida Boyaca and third option would be Avenida 68.

When is the dog arriving?

I think you'd be better leaving the car outside Bogota (somewhere safe obviously then get a Taxi or Bus on the way in then get a taxi back with the dog,the roads are pretty well signposted from Medellin to Manizales then Manizales to Bogota so best of luck!

I think you would be crazy to do that drive. Maybe it was just the days that I did it, but there were two incidents along the way that stopped traffic for 3 hours. There were about 2000 trucks along the way and very difficult to pass them. Never again.

Thanks you guys,

MB,

I just hope it was the days you chose to drive as I am pretty much stuck with having to drive it.

Bill,

It is the german shepherd I had hoped to bring back personally from Belgrade. However air france has an embargo on animals in cargo so he gets shipped cargo from Budapest to Bogota at a much greater cost..

Just over 2 years. No he should be able to rest in the back of my truck. He will be worthless for a few days as it is an extremely long trip and dogs suffer jet lag just as we do. But I know the dog and should be able to identify if he is not holding up well at any point. Part of the high cargo cost is for providing care, food and water, at stops along the route.

I will let you know how it actually works out. I am not looking forward to the trip, but I am excited to be getting my dog home.

Well then, good luck and be careful passing on those switchbacks.

You don't need to go through Manizales to go to Bogota.

I think 8 hours is fine but would allow 10 just in case.

The road should be fine, it is a nice drive. Take ciudad de cali avenue to get to Avenida el Dorado and then to the airport. There is construction on Av. Boyaca and Avenida el Dorado so traffice is crazy around there.

Went bello through el dorada to bogota and it took about 8 and 1-2 hours to do 400 KM. About the same on the way back. two thirds of the road is mountains where the road is single laned in each direction and when you finally do pass the tanker going 10KM per hour you meet another slow moving truck about a quarter of a mile further up or down the road. Road conditions sucked in most places. Signage got a little weak in small towns and had to ask for directions a couple times each way. These are rather grueling hours and driving conditions. We split the trip in half and did it over two days the way home which was the way I would do it in the future if I ever do it again. Gasoline both ways was about $140 USD and road toals were probably $70. Lodging in Bogota airport area more expensive then around any US airports and a room cost us $228 USD dicounted!!

But after the dog had had about 40 hours trip time we cleared him through the vet and Dian in about 3 hours and other then dehydration and hunger the dog made it okay. So when all was said and done it was worth it to get my boy home, but in the future I will make flying to Bogota my first and most appealing option.

Oh, saw a moto hit a dog and lose control right in front of me around rio negro and an overturned truck and three slides on the way to bogota and so I can appreciate that one little incident could potentially make this trip a 12 hour trip.

Thanks everyone for the help!
