Caracas Now has Dubious Honor of Murder Capital of the World

The Torch has been passed,,,LOL

When some people think of the most dangerous places in Latin America, Colombia and Mexico usually come to mind. But Wednesday's Foreign Policy Magazine ranked Caracas, Venezuela, as the "murder capital of the world."

The news was delivered at the Americas Conference by Leopoldo López Mendoza, the mayor of Chacao, an upscale municipality in Caracas. Just last month, López made international headlines when Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez barred him from running for mayor of greater Caracas. López delivered the news about Caracas as a panelist on Political Parties and Elections in Latin America. The city has 130 homicides per 100,000 residents in comparison to the once bloody city of Medellín, Colombia, which now has just 30 murders per 100,000.

Caracas has been a dangerous city for a long time. Medellin wasn't socialist when it was the murder capital of the world.

And Simon, how is this a victory for Colombia? The murder rate in Caracas is exclusive of the murder rate in Medellin... so "better them than us" isn't even applicable. Why not "too bad, maybe Medellin can be set as an example of how to make a city safer..."

I think anything under 20 murders per 100k per year is acceptable. You can't expect people not to off each other every so often. It's human nature.

in colombia ,i think you will find ,if some one gets killed in the street it will be in the papers ,but if they are taken to hospital and die there it will not be,so the numbers are a lot higher than you see.

No... most of the time it goes ignored...

"so the numbers are a lot higher than you see"

The statistics are fairly accurate (homicide rates), but they are higher than the mainstream media would have us think.

manINred I Agree..the media only reports of what they know and makes good press
if all was known... these numbers would be much higher

Chavez wants to be the leader of all Latin America and anger the Yanquis yet he cannot solve the crime problem in Caracas. Maybe Chavez should forget about the rest of Latin American and concentrate on his own country like URIBE in Colombia?

talk to anyone who lives in Caracas and you´ll find that the numbers are probably right or that there is, at least, way more violence there now.

Yeah, I wouldnt be planning any R&R trips to Caracas anytime soon and if I do go I want somebody there at the airport to meet me. I dont trust that place one bit, and its virtually impossible to hear anything postive about Caracas from travelers coming thru. Despite all of Colombias problems I dont feel the same way about it and have no reservations about flying in solo and navigating. All the cities, maybe with the exception of Cali have gotten much better as far as I can determine. I didnt feel the same sense of security in Rio de Janeiro either. Theres another city where any friggin thing can hit u at any given moment without warning.

heh, brother...'work' sucks. i did my time.

and about rio. screw that place. i had just arrived from senegal, west africa and they ripped me off in the airport...i just said to hell with that place and flew on to caracas. worse!

and i had thought africa was bad. went on to panama and relaxed a bit and then onto guatemala where i could do my work (textiles). i was at the tail end of a 44,000 km trek and was on 'tilt' so guatemala was real easy and from there, on home to calif.
