Hola,

next week I'll be traveling for a three week trip to Colombia.
Main tatgets to visit are the amazon region and Popayan & San Augustin.
Apart from visiting Bogota, I'd like to travel either to Cali or Medellin.
What is your recomendation?

Hi Mongo,

what do you think about the local climate & attitude.
I'm a bit worried about the situation in medellin due to a recently published travel-report, the mentality in Medellin seems to be slighty "agressive"- or let me say impolite.
Do you share this experience?

Regards

well you will most likely pass through cali if you are going to popayan, so you could probably go to both, unless you are flying everywhere.

Jann,
I am certainly no expert on Medellin, but unless something has changed in the last 8 months, I found Paisas to be some of the friendliest and most helpful people I have met in my travels in Cen & South America. Did not experience aggresiveness, unless you count the cabbies driving.

One comment on Mangos, made a mistake of checking it out one night when there was a big football match going on, a pretty mind blowing experience, this giant hall and no one in there but me, 2 midgets, a drunk passed out gringo and about 5 hot looking waitresses.

I love both cities, but Medellin ranks ahead of the 2.
I'm not afraid to tell my friends in Cali this either.
As far as politeness Jann, paisas are sweeter and friendlier than you can imagine!!!

1. Mangos is dope for what it is: a tourist spot. It is a lot of fun - but it is touristy - I had a great time both times I have been. I go to Medellin once every other month and never go anymore. But if I had a friend coming in from out of town, unfamiliar with medellin, like the poster here, I would go and recemend going.

2. Cali has hotter women period. Both Medellin and Cali are cool cities. I think Cali is a little more fun - the people I think party a little harder. Cali is also seedier. Watch your back and you will be fine - but I always felt (and this is based on gut) a little more on edge throughout cali than in Medellin.

3. Medellin is also a great city. It offers a ton of culture, the best food in Colombia, and also has very nice people and of course - smoking hot women. There is a ton to do in Medellin.

To conclude, I agree with Corporalgator - hit both. Medellin can be covered somewhat thoroughly in 3-4 days, Cali same - they are not super far apart by plane a couple of hours, if that, and assuming a layover in Bogota.

My overall rank for Cities in Colombia:

1. Cali
2. Cartagena
4. Medellin
5. Bucara
6. Manizales
7. Bogota

Gringo newbie... Medellin 100%, Cali is not for beginners.. Much better Climate and cleaner, safer city Medellin is. Even has more tourist attractions.

They cant even get the freakin MIO working... The cabbies always are joking with me saying "Its already old before even being introduced" The station stops are getting old, beat up and very dirty.

Do they wear pants everywhere in Cali? Ive noticed and been told this is the norm in alot of latin america, regardless of the temperature.

I dont know why latin americans cant wear shorts and flip flops like the backpackers sometimes. Dont they see the comfort value? Im not trying to be ethnocentric, but I doubt swamp ass is something anyone feels cultural pride over.

I get stares everywhere I go because of my LOUD NIKE shorts.. I wear them everywhere, EXCEPT when I go out at night to rumbiar, then im dressed to the nines.. I dont sacrifice comfort for assimilation.
