Bush finally sends funds to Colombia

http://www.mlive.com/us-politics/index.ssf/2008/10/bush_finally_sends_...

After pressing Congress all year to approve a Colombia trade pact, the Bush administration is only now releasing millions in American aid enacted last December to help President Alvaro Uribe’s government curb the violence against union workers.

An estimated $19.8 million was set aside for the Colombia Prosecutor General’s office in the fiscal 2008 foreign aid budget, including funds for witness protection and human rights programs and the prosecution of paramilitary forces accused of killing civilians.

The bill was signed into law by President Bush last Dec. 26, yet the Colombian Embassy confirmed to Politico that the State and Justice Departments did not complete the required approvals and paperwork until this month—when a new fiscal year was already underway

The money was not a last-minute addition in December but had been a priority in Congress since the summer of 2007. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said he flagged the delay with the administration as early as in April after being told by a senior Colombian official that the money had not yet been released

Just more BS by the Bush administration trying to manipulate events to his/Cheney's friends' political and/or financial advantage. I just hope Obama keeps at least some kind of aid coming to Colombia.

Yeah really, depending on Aide that comes from other countres does not exactly make you sustainable and in the long run the less sustainable the less stable Colombia will be.

Smile if you are a thinker!
