Attitude to mental illness on PBH

I have had some real experience of this and basically people here in the Friendly Talkzone have the ostrich syndrome, they simple bury their heads in the sand and pretend it is not happening. When faced with questions from friends or relatives or other concerned parties they invent improbable excuses which in reality nobody really believes. This seems to be the last great taboo here.
Is the attitude different in other Colombia forums?
My personal view is that mental illness is remarkable frequent, they say 1 in 3 suffer at some time in their lives, why not be more open and understanding and support those suffering .
Is it really so different having a physical disease like cancer that everyone is happy to describe in the most minutest detail and one which often is caused by a real physiological condition.
Please, restrict any comments to sensible or at least genuinely witty ones because I suspect that with the prevelance of these illnesses there are many of us who have to live with this.

There are many of us who have to live with this? Dude, we're all living with it on PBH, PsychoButHappy.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Heaven and hell can be right here on earth. Mental illness is a hell I hope to never experience.

Although when I moved to Colombia, everyone thought I was crazy.

A couple of guys with multiple personalities write all the posts on PBH. Rocinante was a tough one for me.

You're title, "Attitude to mental illness on PBH" shouldn't that be "Attitude towards mental illness on PBH?"

Peter Green was an excellent example of a great talent who burnt himself out thanks to the pressures of fronting the super-group Fleetwood Mac (real version, rather than the pleasant soft rock band of latter years) and also taking the wrong drugs, including LSD. Syd Barrett was another.
Peter Green was occasionally seen effectively living the life of a hermit/tramp when he was in Southend, Essex in the UK. I knew a psychiatric nurse who worked in the area and Mr. Green would spend months at a time in the hospital undergoing various forms of treatment like ECT and apparently he was in a horrible state. I saw him "in concert" in a small London club/pub in the late seventies or early eighties. He sat there just about managing to play a few chords and Snowy White did the lead parts. Green's exceptional voice was also shot to bits.
I have experienced many sad emotions regarding rock and roll casualties: Hendrix, the Buckleys, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, etc. But to witness Peter G. as a near vegetable due to his mental illness was among the most sad.
On a personal basis, I went through some sort of private hell in the mid-eighties. In the space of a few months, I split from a long-term live-in partner, my cousin died at an early age of cancer, my boss at work was very ill so suddenly I became the boss among other events which was including semi-self destruction. I started off with panic attacks that became more frequent and intense and I began to lose touch with reality a little: I could see myself a little like looking from the outside in and it was frightening and I became occasionally irrational. Fortunately I could recognise that I was not going to improve on my own and immediately sought advice from the British NHS. 6 months of occupational therapy and I was OK again and actually more strong afterwards to face this stressful world again. Support from friends and family at the time was A1; without that who knows? I could have gone down as far as Greeny. And Danny Kirwin. And Jeremy Spencer. That group was cursed but they remain one of my favourite blues/rock bands of all time, meaning the classic Green lineup. Nobody could quite get that feel that Greeny had and Danny was a great player too.

First of all, I felt no shame about my blip and nobody put me into a box either. My friends and family did help me to avoid the situations that made me feel bad though until I had recovered. One thing that I did during my illness was to avoid any form of chemical stimulants, including mary jane and I also reduced my alcohol consumption dramatically. This ensured that I retained the ability to remain orientated at all times and it prevented feelings of unreality from occurring. Probably the use of excessive amounts of the aforementioned is the major cause of mental illness anyway and I recognised that quickly. Coincidentally just before my traumatic period, one work colleague developed a very bad drink problem which nearly killed him and another had a nervous breakdown a few months before. I was on hand to offer support to both and I was told by a shrink that the combination of my personal circumstances, in conjuction with my personal supporting roll in helping my friends to deal with their problems was enough to drive anybody to poor mental health. Since my recovery in 1987, I have had no reoccurrances of these problems apart from the occasional feelings of claustrophobia in stupid situations but now I know the early warning signs and remove myself from where I am until I feel comfortable again. Caffeine can make me more sensitive, so I avoid coffee/tea before flying or attending stressful meetings etc-just in case it sparks me off! It was not good fun at work either; my promotion was delayed for 2 years to prove I would not crack again! loss of 2 years top salary; could do with that now,LOL!
As for Pedro Verde, pure genius that was snuffed out at his peak but thank God he did what he did when he did it. Even BB King has an enormous admiration for him! Not many like him but generally the best die early or go mad-being a genius requires a very delicate mind no doubt and without it you have an average artist, the likes of which are far too common.
Talking about books, I have started writing one. My "rock and roll years" with memories from the first records that turned me on, the first gig in 1971 up until now with all or most of my skeletons to be revealed too. Why I remember a band and what was happening at the time and with whom etcetcetc. Probably a book for my nieces to read but I suppose I could add a little fiction to it to make it slightly more interesting; we will see how it developes!
OK, now you all know that I have had a slightly unstable period in my lifetime but I feel no shame about it. Unlikely to return unless Colombia drives me totally nuts!

Mongo, relax, it's not that big a deal.

I don't think PBH has any rule about multiple posts. If someone posts the same article twice, one obsolete thread usually just drops off the active list fast because nobody posts on it.

If you want to have a discussion with Ken or whoever, that discussion has value to you no matter what thread it's attached to.

Here you Kurious.

You have to remember though, that a lot of GPs in Colombia hand out the meds to people instead of having them see a specialist.

Or they just go and buy the Prozac themselves and self treat.
