mcheasley, I live in Raleigh and have been wanting to look into the possibility of shipping some stuff myself. I haven't been able to find any shipping costs, so not sure if its feasible or not. And also, from what I've read on here, it seems like everything that arrives in Colombia is heavily taxed, so I'm not sure if its worth it or not. Have you looked into these concerns at all? I'd like to know if you have any information on the subject.

If possible, I'd be interested too. I want to ship a motorcycle and a lot of tools and household items. Anyway, I'm interested if you know, or find out, anything.

Thanks,

Mongo

Mongo, is the motorcycle brand new, with low miles, current model year, and clear title without lien? I think bikes fall under the same rule as cars. If you figure out a way to get the bike to Colombia legally or semi-legally, please let me know. I even thought about disassembling mine and packing the parts into a bunch of different boxes. Then, having a mechanic in Colombia reassemble the parts. Of course there is that darn vin number and date of manufacture - and of course no proof of Colombian purchase / registration.

Wow, Robert Jorge, nice bike! Gotta love a GSX-R! I also like the Mustang......nice!

I don't have this bike yet, because I'm still weighing whether or not its worth it to buy it and ship it down there. I plan on getting a new BMW GS-800 enduro, or "dual-sport" as they are usually now called. I've always had enduros because I love trail riding and I'd kill myself on anything as fast as that GSX-R!

Do you know if its better to bring down an older bike? Unfortunately the GS-800s are new, but I guess if I had to, I could settle for an older GS-650, which is also a great bike off-road.

But yeah anyway, I wish I could tell you more Robert, but still trying to figure it out myself. My Colombian novia is a lawyer, so I'll get her to look into it and let you know what I find out.

Thanks Mongo. Simply put, you (we) can't import a vehicle into Colombia that is not a freshly bought vehicle. (And then the import duty is ridiculous) Absolutely no used cars or bikes can be imported permanently. Now, with that said, it is Colombia, and probably there is a way to get it done. I am not a gambler though. I guess my point is: is that it is cost prohibitive to import a vehicle into Colombia because of the tariffs, and vehicles are way more expensive in Colombia anyway. So it is probably better to buy in Colombia, get ripped off, but at least avoid the hassle of the shipping.

RJ I don't think the statement is completly true. I understand that a bike that is over 24 years old and considered to be a classic or a collectible may be imported. Of course that is of little use in this particular case.

I have a 1984 goldwing I am hanging onto for just that reason.

FYI..... do not rely on consulates for relaiable info re importing your personal property and it's relative valuation by DIAN. you need to communicate directly with DIAN, be specific, and get it in writing if you want to get a grip on actual costs. i've done this way to many times (containers) and it's like gettin laid every time. what they don't screw you on impuestos, they'll steal. it's a gauntlet. any of you can pm me for any particulars and numbers for DIAN and the port at cartegena. good luck,

Feldz - you are correct. I have also never seen a bike like mine in Colombia. Actually, there is a Yama R1 in Villavo, owned by a guy who owns one of the discos in 7 de Agosto. I am sure there are a few others around. But, it isn't "normal". I saw a dude one night try and park his '99 CBR 600 RR outside of our (at the time) bar. The dude dumped it twice on the sidewalk - and was still treated like a VIP upon entry. jajaja

RJ - It may be a totally different set of rules, however people have brought used bikes and vehicles into Colombia to travel through on; so it may be possible. As stated the rules could be totally different for the two situations, but maybe something to look into. You can absolutely bring a used vehicle into Colombia on a tourist visa. However, it leaves with you. Who wants, or can afford, to import a car or bike to tootle around on for 3 or 6 months? Ya, there are ways to cross a border and get a new stamp which allows the vehicle to stay in Colombia again with you. But it is not permanent, and it is an incredible hassle. You can't sell the vehicle (legally). You can't register it. If the vehicle satys in Colombia after the tourist stamp is expired, the vehicle is illegal.

I don't need the super speed - especailly here. But do you remmeber the speed test between that super fast vette (top speed like 200MPH) vs the ZX-11? It took the vette 12 miles to catch the bike.

instead of the Devin link:
(http://devin.com/img/nighthawk-750.jpeg) - copy this link in another browser it works - click it from here you get genital warts and old homos.

The Devin Server is changing the image via a redirect when someone links to it externally- like embedded in a pBH post or other forum. Just refresh the page and the image changes and changes. Try it - some of the images are disturbing - Pretty clever on their part - some servers just don't want anyone linking externally.

From now on I will grab the image and put it on tiny pic.

Houston - last night my image was cached so I still saw the bike.
