I spent 6 months in Bolivia in 2005 and loved it. It´s a beautiful country with wonderful people. La Paz is an amazing city.

I'd REALLY like to hear more first-hand experience in Bolivia. I have an online amiga who just annoys the hell out of me, to see her country. She's in Santa Cruz. Landlocked doesn't really ring my chimes, since I'm a sailor- but there seems to be good air service in the general area.

I've been slowly investigating online....Bolivia seems to be an undiscovered expat paradise. Beautiful country, and cheap cost of living.

Robert Jorge - I don't know how people define "major lake" but Tititcaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. It's about 140 miles long and up to 70 miles wide. The Navy exists up there, too - because the lake is an international border with Peru and (some say) to keep the skills alive should Bolivia ever regain access to the sea, which they lost in a war with Chile over 100 years ago.

Don't think Bolvia will get that land back in a hurry, I heard from a Chileno friend in Glasgow that the piece of land which was taken by Chile has many copper mines.
Peter, whats your opinion on the safety in Bolivia? I did read somewhere on the internet that due to Bolivia being about the poorest in South America that robberies and kidknappings of backpackers was becoming popular.

Yes, Bolivia scenery is incredible. Point your camera anywhere at random and you have a great picture.

Macgringo: Bolivia is VERY safe. It's one of the (or perhaps the) safest countries in South America. There are lots of robberies in Peru, but not in Bolivia.
